There have been many books, videos, and late night half hour shows promoting a specific product, all designed to provide back pain relief to the hundreds of thousands of Americans who have been afflicted by this condition. Like spinal injury, it isn’t quite curable, but there are many things that can be done to lessen and manage the chronic pain of long-time sufferers. Back pain is going to be with us for a long time to come, but there’s lots of stuff that we can do to prepare. If you live in the North, you can learn to properly shovel snow, because that seems to be the way that everyone’s pre-existing condition is triggered. Sometimes there may be an initial cause for back pain that stays with you for the rest of your life. It’s like a knee injury that doesn’t ever heal and prevents you from using it to its prime capacity. Sometimes the instigating cause can be something simple like carrying a canoe while hiking just a little too long, or being thrown off a horse suddenly. It may not cause any broken bones that will show on an x-ray, but there will be a specific point of pain which can radiate outwards. The other major cause for consistent back pain is related to the way you use your body on a daily basis, especially if there are patterns that haven’t changed in twenty, thirty or forty years. Bad posture and excessive stress, horrible sitting conditions and a lifestyle that has all but eliminated daily exercise will all contribute to weakening your ability to cope with the waves of pain that you will eventually feel. Either way you get the condition, there is always the possibility of it accelerating to a chronic condition, which will mean you will need chronic treatment. Some kinds of back conditions can be alleviated by muscular therapy which concentrates on your movements throughout the day which stress every part of your body. An ergonomic chair can be adjusted to compensate for weak spots and a therapist will also help you learn how to move in a less tense way to allow the body to take care of itself. Many have found that Tai Chi, which is a seamless exercise broken down into about a hundred movements, works well with people wanting to exercise while feeling a back condition. The exercises can be done at any speed, and the slower the better so you can feel the meditative aspect, and allow a toning of all muscles in a very gentle way. The greatest number of practitioners are actually in their later years, though many have been doing the set every morning of their life.
